The 5 Benefits of Living in a Care Home
For a lot of people, the thought of living in a care home is one that shouldn’t be taken lightly, it requires a lot of thought and consideration. The everyday stresses of home management can worsen someones mental and physical health and therefore making living in an assisted residential care home a great option. If you choose to reside in a care home, you will always be encouraged to live exactly how you wish to, without worrying about any daily chores.
Whether you’re looking for some extra companionship, a more structured routine or just additional care and support, living in a care home can provide exactly that. Although deciding to move yourself or a loved one into a care home can be tricky, it’s a lot easier to make when you’re fully aware of what to expect and the many benefits that group living can provide.
Advantages of Living in a Residential Care Home
Before you choose to move into a care home it’s important to take a look further at some of the main advantages of a residential care home in Aberdeen.
Professional Care & Support
Within all care homes, one thing you can certainly receive is the professional care given by trained and experienced healthcare professionals. A lot of care homes in Aberdeen offer multiple care types, from Nursing Care to Respite Care. This means that every single resident will receive tailored care, all from the correct staff members, including registered nurses. Additionally, a lot of care homes will provide medication management and/or medication reminders for those who struggle with their prescriptions as well as aid with mobility, more advanced care and personal care.
Individualised Support
When you choose to live in a full-time residential care home, you can be rest assured that yourself or your loved one will be comfortable with their surroundings, knowing they’ll receive care 24/7, no matter the situation or circumstance. Many care homes will apply a ‘personalised care plan system’, this is where residents will be regularly assessed, care plans will be updated accordingly and overall a better outcome of care will be given.
Those who receive nursing care will be assigned their own ‘key nurse’ which is where one of the registered nurses will will serve as a friendly and familiar face around the home. This nurse will be someone for the resident and their family members to speak to if they require any extra help, support or advice, alongside medical care.
Yet, regardless of the care you’re after, compassionate support will always be provided.
Camaraderie & Togetherness
A great benefit of group living is the sense of companionship that residents have with each other. Residents can bond with other like-minded individuals, finding friends for life in both other residents and staff members. Friends and family members of residents are always welcome to visit their loved ones as many times as they which to, due to care homes adopting an open door policy.
This sense of camaraderie and togetherness is built through sharing stories with each other and taking part in an activities programme. This is where the homes’ activity coordinators plan and organised a range of fun, exciting and engaging activities for residents to take part in, including dementia friendly activities.
Here at Deeside Care Home, we’re strong believers in the idea that no two days are or should be the same; we want nothing more for our residents than to make that idea even more of a reality. We really value our residents and their independence, which is why not all of our activities are supervisor-led. Of course, or days out and/or special excursions, having a member of our team out with us is essential, yet, we do encourage our residents to take charge and do what makes them happy. Which is why, a lot go our activities are resident driven and have usually been co-organised by both our residents and our activity coordinators.
We want to reiterate that just because our residents have relocated with us at Deeside, it doesn’t mean that the way they live their life needs to change, we want our residents to continue living their way how they wish to, with activities along the way that don’t interfere. Additionally, our activities are not compulsory, they’re there to be enjoyed and if a resident decides to join in and it turns out not to be their cup of tea, that’s okay.
As we know, loneliness is something that a lot of older people tend to face, yet with care homes like ours offering plenty of opportunities for our residents, alongside more reasons to interact with others, it’s less likely this would happen.
A Structured Routine
Having a structured routine is so important, especially for older people and in most care homes, this is a priority. In care homes that provide dementia care, or other forms of specialist care, routines are essential to ensuring the happiness and wellbeing of their residents. Alongside care and support, staff members will always try and encourage self-sufficiency where possible and it’s important for residents to maintain their independence for as long as possible.
Through creating care plans, updating and improving processes, alongside incorporating some nostalgic and exciting activities within the weekly activities programmes, care homes can come between new and exciting, comfortable and traditional. Often care homes will use these activity sessions to enable residents to further develop their skills, allowing them to learn something new, as well as enjoying some leisurely time through the care homes facilities and amenities.
A Safe Place to Call Home
Residents will always have their own personal space to retreat to and their private bedrooms will often have en-suite wet rooms with all modern consciences that someone may need. A lot of care homes and nursing homes will provide residents with the option to customise their rooms and if anything encourage this as much as possible to ensure it feels homely and welcoming. By creating a safe space filled with personal items and things that remind them of familiar surroundings, gives residents an extra peace of mind. As we know, moving house let alone into a care home can be both stressful and difficult and it’s the small home comforts which are guaranteed to make all the different for each individual.
Reducing the Stresses of the Cost of Living Crisis
Living in a care home can provide a peace of mind for those struggling with household management, including paying bills, especially whilst the cost of living is constantly on the rise. Therefore, living in a care home could help eliminate worries, especially as the colder season approaches.
